Thiess has a long journey of more than 30 years in Indonesia providing mining services for various projects and clients with head office in Jakarta and support facilities in Balikpapan including workshops and training center.

We are seeking experienced people for the following position:


EOI - Senior Legal Counsel (926842)


In this role, you will:

  • Provide practical, innovative and commercial written and verbal legal advice as required
  • Review tender documents and perform contract risk assessments
  • Develop and maintain commercial and respectful relationships with clients, regulators, joint venture partners and other business partners including suppliers and subcontractors
  • Negotiate contract terms with clients, subcontractors and suppliers
  • Detailed understanding of contractual and legislative interpretation with practical, commercial advice on its application to the business
  • Prepare and deliver relevant and targeted commercial and compliance training to the business in an approachable and easy to understand manner
  • Proactive management of claims, disputes, and litigation always with consideration of best for business options and minimal external cost
  • Liaise with government regulators as required
  • Conduct Code of Conduct and Safety investigations as required, including the review of safety incident reports for the business and preservation of legal professional privilege where appropriate

What skills and experience do you need?

  • Law degree and admitted to legal practice
  • Current practising certificate preferred but not mandatory
  • External law firm experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Experience in resources industry preferred
  • Good commercial acumen with stakeholders
  • Ability to collaborate with key stakeholders and personnel with integrity at all times
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) in English and other languages preferred
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work under pressure and be flexible
  • Appropriate skills in Microsoft systems including Sites, PowerPoint and Excel, as well as network drive administration
  • Travel will also be required
